Learn the Last Great Secret Of Finesse Bass Fishing in...
Gobi's Gone Wild..... Secrets of the Erie Darter.
Date: June 20th, 1987
Place: Lake Erie
Location: 20 miles southeast of the Detroit River
Sometime in the morning on Lake Erie a Russian ship from the black sea makes its way from lake Erie to Lake Superior. While on the journey the ship released some of the ballast water that it held in the ships hull. The water contained many foreign invaders, with it micro-organisms, plankton and even fish eggs. Some of those eggs hatch and against all odds begin to populate the lake. From Lake Erie they spread around the great Lakes Basin and begin to populate the connecting waters of the great lakes.
After a decade there are little minnows everywhere. Then these small fish called gobies are considered a dangerous nuisance that will disturb the ecology of the Great Lakes. The Michigan department of Natural resources says that they will eat all the food that other small fish need, steal the eggs and ruin the Great Lakes. They tell you that if you catch a Gobi... Kill It! There were even some fishing tournaments organized to catch and kill these dangerous little critters. And then after all of the hype and nonsense about the goby.... something strange happens.
Someone decides to cut a small mouth bass open and finds something amazing! The small mouth bass were full of Gobys Absoultely Chocked full of Gobys!
In fact the bass absolutely love them. Even the large mouth in the harbors of the Great Lakes enjoy chomping down on the gobi. It turns out that the gobi is the perfect food for game fish. It was like made to order food for bass. They never grow to big for bass to eat like a skip jack, it is not long like a ,,,,,,,,, and it does not even have skin fins like a bluegill. Gobi's are like little protein shakes swimming around. Easy to catch and easy for bass to digest!
Turns out not only was it the perfect food for bass.... but it also the perfect bait to imitate to catch bass. Sometime around the year 2000, gobi imitations became very popular. Using tubes and grubs brown in color bounced off of the bottom would catch a ton of small mouth . Around that time Pour Boys bait company invented a straight bait grub with rings around the body. This hand poured bait was the perfect imitation of the goby, short and thick and ready to catch those bass. The bait was poured mostly in greens and browns to imitate the baby. When paired with the right equipment the Erie Darter became the go to bait on lakes because it always worked. It worked in rain or shine, good fishing conditions, freezing cold or boiling hot summer waters. It worked everywhere! Even on water that contained no goby at all.
